Educational background

I completed my undergraduate studies with a Master's degree at the University of Munich/Germany, Department of Roman Provincial Archaeology, focussing on the relationship between Roman provincial religious beliefs and military architecture (Prof. Günter Ulbert and Prof. Michael Mackensen). Then, I moved on to spend a year at Santa Cruz/California (UCSC) to study Native American Archaeology, with a particular emphasis on the South-West.

After that, I found my way to the School of Archaeological Studies at the University of Leicester, where I completed my PhD with Prof. David Mattingly and Dr. Graham Morgan on Roman Iron Production in the East Midlands. My doctoral research was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) of the British Academy and contributed to the Archaeology Department's Landscape Studies Group, headed by Prof. Graeme Barker. Already during my PhD research, I had the opportunity to contribute as a slag specialist to a number of archaeological projects in the East Midlands and North Africa.
