A UK Network of Excellence in Non-thermal Plasma Science

The Open University has co-ordinated the response of the UK technological plasma community’ to the 2004 EPSRC review of UK plasma physics. In January 2005 we were awarded an EPSRC grant (£60k) for a network linking UK plasma groups in a dozen HEIs, around the theme of ‘non-thermal plasmas’. This network is now recognised as the UK Centre of Excellence (CoE) in technological plasma research within the international plasma CoE programme initiated by Japan in April 2004. You'll find here an outline of what we're about and who to contact for more information.

Technological Plasma Workshop 2006 (TPW2006)

The next meeting in the series of Technological Plasmas Workshop will take place on 14th / 15th December 2006 at the Chancellors' Conference Centre, The University of Manchester, Manchester UK. The invited speakers are Ulrich Kogelschatz, Volkmar Hopfe, Jae Koo Lee, Declan Diver and James Bradley. There will be opportunities for contributed papers and posters.
Full details are at the conference website www.tpw-uk.org

Plasma Measurement Techniques for Process Control

Following the initial call for expression of interest in the workshop proposal, a meeting was organised for those that responded. This was held at UCL on Tues 31st January 06. The outcome of this meeting was

1 that we shall not go ahead immediately with an international workshop in view of the established Advanced Equipment and Process Control Conference and decide if we should be more closely involved.

2. that we shall organise a UK workshop within 2006, with the emphasis on signal control of plasma measurements. Planning for this is underway and an invitation to participate will be posted on the web site before the end of February.

3. that we should be more “active” in the “Frontiers in Low Temperature Plasma Diagnostics” meeting in 2007 – level to be discussed with current organisers.

More information on item #2 is expected before the end of February.

Aims

1) To act as a focal point for UK research in non-thermal (non-equilibrium) plasmas.
2) To be the UK link for the international CoE network related to non-thermal (non-equilibrium) plasma science.
3) To co-ordinate UK response and participation in international research programmes.
4) To co-ordinate topical research meetings/seminars and preparation of student and technical training schools.
5) To collect and disseminate information on UK plasma expertise through acting as liaison office for UK (and international) plasma industry.
6) To promote short-term exchanges of staff between UK research teams (and overseas) to develop collaborative research projects and sharing of facilities.
